You will only be able to use manual focus mode with AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. The D3100 does not have a built in autofocus motor. In other for Nikon DSLR cameras to Autofocus with a lens, either the camera or the lens needs to have a built in focus motor. AF-I and AF-S Lenses have built in focus motor. Nikon DSLRs with built in focus motors have a Autofocus mode switch located below the lens removal button on the camera.

The D5000 cannot autofocus with this lens because neither the camera nor the lens have a focus motor. Please read the article in the link below to find out what lenses are right for your DSLR.

Hi Scott, there is nothing you are doing wrong. In order for a DSLR to Autofocus with a lens, either the camera or the lens needs to have a built in autofocus motor. Neither the D5200 nor this lens have a built in focus motor, and therefore autofocus is not possible. Auto focus is only possible when AF-S or AF-I lenses which have built in autofocus motor are used with the D5200.
