Question

I am considering purchasing the D5100...

I am considering purchasing the D5100. Can I change the aperature and iso settings with this camera? My current camera I cannot change the settings. I really want to get blurred backgrounds on my pictures. Which lenses are good for that? Is this camera good for beginners using a DSLR? Any comments/reviews on the camera and lenses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

USA warranty honored in other countries?

Answer ID 9677 | Published 04/07/2004 12:28 PM | Updated 02/15/2011 11:07 AM

Is the Nikon USA warranty valid outside the United States?

The Nikon USA warranty on film cameras, lenses, and speedlights will be honored by Nikon-authorized service centers outside the United States as long as you have the yellow copy of the Nikon USA warranty and your sales receipt from a dealer in the USA. The key to the validity of the warranty is a sales receipt from the country in which you purchased the equipment. If you purchase equipment in another country where the Nikon Worldwide Warranty applies, copies of the sales receipt and this warranty are necessary to obtain warranty service in the USA. Buying the equipment with a Nikon Worldwide Warranty in the United States is not recommended because that warranty is not valid in the USA without a sales receipt from an overseas dealer, and it is not valid outside the USA with a sales receipt from a dealer in the USA.

Note that USA products usually include have blank warranty cards with the camera company's USA addresses on them. Gray Nikon cameras and lenses used to come with international warranty papers, and lately the stores selling gray are just pulling all the warranty documents out of the boxes.

In other words, be careful, and know your dealer.

Hi
I would say 50mm for portrait lens...why...if u buy FX version for DX camera, it is close to 70mm which is considered by most to be a great portrait focal length, as it is very close to what the human eye sees, i.e.: no real distortion, a good working distance from model...
I own 105mm VR 2.8 and shooting portraits as a prime lens is tack sharp always, but i need to get back from model too far... and if you can afford the f/1.4, the more expensive the sharper and more durable it will be...and you can have an awesome macro lens as well if you choose that version...

As for flash, if you can afford the 910, I would buy it... why, because it will do more than any other lens and will last a lifetime, you can use it on this camera and many to come in the future...the new flashes are incredibly versatile...if you cant afford that model, then the SB700 is great as well, would do all you want for now I believe...

Hope this helps

You can get a million different answers for the best portrait lens, it depends on what type of portraits you are shooting. If you don't want to spend alot of money wait for the new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. It will have an effective focal length of 127mm, not too close and not too far. If you don't mind spending money then get the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. Just my opinions others will differ.

You will need Camera Control Pro 2, using the included USB, in order to operate your camera remotely and capture unique images directly into your computer. If you want to use an external monitor you will need to get in contact with the manufacture of the third party equipment for compatibility and support information with our products.

Question

What is a good wide angle lens for videoing on the d5100?

I was at my sons diving meeting in NY this past weekend and wanted to use my new camera to video his dives but I didn't think the kit lenses were the right fit. I am always pretty close to the diving boards but neither of the lenses felt wide enough if that makes sense. Hoping someone can recommend a moderate priced wide angle lens if that is what I need.

A good wide angle ... I won the 17-35mm 2.8... I know the 17-55mm 2.8 is considered a top lens...
If you want a prime lens think of 35mm maybe...
I dont know what your kit lens was, size wise...You need to consider what it is, use it in situations of all types you will encounter and then take a look at your needs ...
For me the 17-35mm has been perfect, I shoot drag races, portraits, events, landscape, nature all of it, and i consider my wide angle to be 17- 35mm, which is not really accurate as i have an older D2X that is DX sensor size not FX, therefore my 17 is really around a 25mm or so...
These lenses i mention are expensive pro grade lenses... I believe others can tell you what non pro lenses are like and if quality n what not is good...I mean from Nikon you will always have quality, its just what you spend is what you get...
Hope i help some...

answer 2
u can photograph anything you want , if u have a tripod, open up aperture to fastest setting and remember , the stars will start to become tiny lines after a little time cos earth is moving...

if you are asking is 8 seconds long enough, probably not if you want stars n space...
i shoot the moon with D2X on 2.8 70-200mm and cam set to spot metering at about 1/500 sec, but thats just the moon and it is bright.
I would say try it
open up aperture to as fast as u can and set cam on something stable or tripod and let it go...

the question is posted for D5100, but you ask about P500 coolpix???

Question

Long Exposure + Timer interval shooting

When I try to do a long series of long exposure shots over a scheduled interval, the camera seems to crash and stop shooting. Right now I've been trying to shoot a set of 480 shots, each one a 30 second exposure, every 30 seconds. After about 100-200 shots, the series stops recording. There's plenty of room on the memory card. Any thoughts? I switched the image size from large to small, and the number of images before a failure increased (from 100 to about 200), but the series still didn't finish.

image quality is set to jpeg fine.

The limitation for Time Lapse is 999. Make sure you're using the EP-5A that is a Power Supply Connector that is required when using the AC adapter EH-5/EH-5a to power the camera.

hi
The NX2 software for photos is amazing, one of the best editing softwares I have ever tried.
I dont think NX2 is even usable with video is it?
I am a mac person and iMovie that comes with mac is amazing for installed software,
and I know Final Cut Pro is professional quality editing software for video.
Hope this helps...
