are you sure you aren't thinking about the charger for a different camera? this one, as shown in the accompanying photo, plugs into the wall via an adapter cable -- not flip-out prongs, like the charger for en-el14 batteries that comes with the D3100.

Question

Charging light not on

Hi,
I have an MH-25 charger and the charging light does not come on at all when I insert a battery into the charger. I have verified that the power outlet is good and that the cord connections are good. Should the light come on? It seems that it should either blink or be on solid.

The unit is about 3-4 month old and I have charged the battery a few times.

Question

Is the wall adapter that comes with the MH-25 (plug) available for sale? Does it have a part number?

My MH-25 came with my Nikon 1 and it has what is called in the documentation the wall adafpter. I also have D90 and having one for my MH-18a charger would be great.

Question

So, the rated input AC 120V, 60Hz, 0.2A; but from another question it can take 220V. Is the charger auto switching (120V/220V, 50Hz/60Hz)?

I require an auto switching charger as I travel overseas often. I had a Nikon charger before that was only rated for 120V, which was not useful for me. And I am not buying the answer that ALL Nikon chargers are auto switching (as in a previous answer); they are not. Since this appears to be the only charger available for the EN-EL15 battery, I would hope that someone there would have exercised some common sense and made the charger multi-voltage and auto switching.

Yes, all Nikon Coolpix cameras have an auto switching (from 100v to 240V 50hz/60hz) battery charger that will work in most countries around the world. AC adapters have similar characteristics. Always check the specification plate on your other battery chargers or AC adapters as third party products may not support dual voltage systems. We do not suggest the use of third party battery chargers and AC adapters with Nikon equipment.
Note that the power cord included with some Nikon chargers or AC adapter is designed for 110 volt use only. A power cord suitable for the local power system should be obtained on arrival, most airport shops and computer suppliers will carry these items which are typically used for laptop computer power supply connections. Be sure that the new cord you buy fits the Nikon adapter you wish to use it with and that it is rated for the voltage in your new location. While not recommended, a simple plug adapter may be used, but caution should be taken as the cord Nikon supplies is not rated for the higher voltage and may heat or fail.

If the light is flickering (not blinking slowly) it means that the ambient temperature is not suited to charging or the USB cable or Charging AC Adapter is not properly connected, or there's a problem with the battery. Besides that everything is normal.

Question

Is there a future USB charging adaptation coming for the charger?

Any chance of getting a USB to USB attachment added to the battery charger? After 20 years of military service and combat photography (15 years abroad) having to buy cords or plug adapters for each country can be a pain. With USB being universal and with the user able to plug in just a laptop or iPad in would limit the usage to USB to charge via the quick charge would be a great help for your international users. Most field accommodations, hotels and airports have limited power outlets/ points to charge up on the fly.

Is it safe to plug a MH-25 into an inverter connected to a car battery?

The inverter says it produces a non-sinusoidal waveform and should not be used with a transformerless battery charger. Is the MH-25 such a beast? Is it safe to use with a non-sinusoidal input?

It is rated at 100-240 volts, if the plug is correct it will work. If the plug configuration is different just purchase the right cord from an electronics retailer., The cords are generic so you don't need a Nikon branded cord.

Question

Two MH-25 Chargers - both work differently?

I have 2 MH-25 Chargers. When an EL-EN15 battery that requires charging is inserted in each charger, they respond differently. Both show an orange LED light, but one blinks and the other remains solid. I suspect one charger isn't working as expected. When charging, which is correct: blinking or solid?

From your manual:
and Charger Read and follow the warnings and cautions on pages xviii–xix and 306–308 of this manual. Do not use the battery at ambient temperatures below 0°C/32°F or above 40°C/104°F; failure to observe this precaution could damage the battery or impair its performance. Capacity may be reduced and charging times may increase at battery temperatures from 0°C/32°F to 15°C/59°F and from 45°C/113°F to 60°C/140°F. X If the CHARGE lamp flashes quickly (about eight times a second) during charging, confirm that the temperature is in the correct range and then unplug the charger and remove and reinsert the battery. If the problem persists, cease use immediately and take battery and charger to your retailer or a Nikon-authorized service representative
