Same issue started a few months ago, of course right after my warranty expired. On last trip a week ago finally when trying to focus, the LCD screen "crashed" and read system failure. When turning it back on it worked again but was able to replicate failure a couple times. Camera is extremely slow to actually snap the picture after holding the shutter halfway down. What are the alternatives Nikon?

It gives blurry pictures and the problem is with the sensors and the software. The software scans for the most appropriate focal length thru a range of distances, when the shutter is half pressed and choses the optimum distance for the user to click to get a sharp picture. Some how the software does not stop the lens at the correct focal distance and hence the blurry pictures. This happens especially at close ups and low light. Nikon does not want to fix this bug.

I think a firmware upgrade is really required for this product. The features are good and at times the picture quality is good. But most times, it comes up with unpredictable results. For a amateur photographer like me who uses auto mode all the time, this camera has been a big disappointment. Pictures are blurry, skin color reproduction not good etc. and answers to my queries to Nikon support who suggested a few things didn't help. My previous cameras which included a sony and pentax which were 5 and 10 years old had produced better results.

My S9100 has the same problem. Especially at high zoom levels, the focus just goes back and forth and refuses to lock on. It appears to really have problems locking onto performers moving around on stage during a concert.

There are no firmware updates for this camera.
Make sure to press the shutter release half way in order to achieve focus and the all the way to take the picture. In that way it won't a delay. Also you can do a reset all to restore settings on your camera.
You press MENU > Setup > Reset All.

Yes, 720p and 480p (and a lot of other formats) are supported by this camera. I have it myself. The reason why it only lists 1080p in the specs is because Nikon's specs pages only list the highest quality camera and video modes.

You can supplement with an Eye Fi card, however, which has some GPS features (make sure it's rated 6 or above). I've not tried the GPS features, but have been pleased to be able to upload my photos as I take them without having to connect to a computer (either all of them or just ones I "protect"--favs).

Nikon operates factories all across the globe and each operates to the same high standard. While individual cameras are marked with their country of manufacture we can't make a blanket statement about which camera is produced where.

Question

Autofocus Problems?

Are there known issues with autofocus on this camera? Will a firmware update be available to fix/improve autofocus? I bought this camera on Wednesday and took it on a weekend family event and it was just short of unusable indoors. I was using out of the box settings although I eventually adjusted the autofocus options some, to no avail. It would just attempt to focus for infinity and the only way I could get it out of its vaporlock would be to either power off/on or tap the zoom control one way or another. And that wasn't a guarantee that it would work at that point versus going right back into vaporlock. Outdoors it was naturally better but it still happened fairly often. And even the "focused" photos indoors weren't really great.

I am planning to return this camera to Best Buy soon unless you can provide a reason not to. I'm certainly not expecting miracles here, just basic "higher quality" point-and-shoot functionality. I have a Canon DSLR but just wanted something compact to take snapshots and video with and do macro-photos that the Canon doesn't handle very well. I have an old Sony p&s digital that takes better photos, quite honestly.

I don't understand where to get the firmware for the S9100 especially since the first post of this forum says there is no firmware update... Is this something posted since that statement was made? I know there's a significant firmware upgrade for the P7000 which is maybe where the confusion comes in. This question is for the S9100 so is there an upgrade or not? When I check the support areas, I see nothing offered.

have you upgraded the firmware to v1.1? this makes a very big difference in terms of autofocus and also write times for raw images. i won't say it is perfect afterwards, but you should do the firmware upgrade before making a final decision. i find that for the way i use a p&s camera that the p7000 does the job, with the known weaknesses...i kept it instead of a g12 which i was using at the same time. the g12 is definitely snappier, but i like the extra reach and some of the features on the nikon...

You are probably doing nothing wrong, the simple fact of the matter is that a p&s will never give the same quality the a DSLR will. That said there are few things that you can do to help, using a tripod for a start to reduce camera shake. Use some form of off camera lighting beit a speed light, natural light or even desk lamps can be used to good effect. If your camera has a self timer use that as even though you might be using a tripod there is still the chance of movement when pressing the shutter button.

To photograph the details of a flower you want to set the camera to the Macro mode. It is identifiable by the icon of a flower. There are a few articles on the Nikonusa.com/L&E site that may be of help to you. Check them out: http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-E... and http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-E....

Question

Auto-Bracketing

Does the S9100 have an Auto-Bracketing feature? If so, is it adjustable for +/- EV and number of exposures?

No, no bracketing, but it does have exposure compensation +/- 2 stops (I believe) Also, it does have a D-lighting and a built in "HDR" feature that helps to better tweak and capture difficult backlit and other situations where there is bright areas and dark areas. It does a pretty good job as far as compact cameras go in dealing with difficult shooting situations with bright/shade areas.

There is no manual shutter or aperture control, nor is there a "bulb" mode. And the lowest setting ISO of 160 will probably never get you anywhere near 1 second in normal lit room. Sorry.

This model offers 19 Digital Vari-program modes (scene Modes). Selecting a program automatically optimizes settings to suit the selected scene.

USB 1.1 should not be a problem as USB is backwards-compatible. It would just be slower doing transfers.

Question

Anyone else have soft focus and blurry picture problems

This camera is driving me crazy. Objects have very soft edges and make everything feel like it's out of focus. Yes, yes, yes, it even happens on a tripod.

Anyone else having these problems or is it just me?

This is the number one complaint that I have with the S9100 -soft focus. It obviously gets worse, the lower the light level. Same as you, it is not the "shaking" as i use a tripod a lot and it is mentioned in many reviews as a characteristic of the photo quality from the S9100. Every once in a while you might get a sharp-"er" image but it doesn't seem consistent to figure out why, regardless of shooting conditions... But even the sharp images are not when you look at the image closeup, say a person's hair...

Question

s9100

Purchased an s9100 on July 4th. Took a few dozen photos, then the lens froze, and display went blank, lense seemed to be making a clicking sound? Would not turn of via on/off button, so had to remove the battery to close the lense. I took the camera back to the retailer who replaced it with another s9100. I appreciate all of the features packed into this camera and the fact that it is Nikon but am concerned about its reliablity. Reading some of the reviews, it seems like this is more than a common issue. I am wondering if you recommend that I return this camera also, before it breaks and try a different brand? It almost sounds like it is a matter of time before this one stops working also.

Return it. My camera is now 2 months old and has the same problem. I wish it had occurred during the first 30 days of my purchase so I could have returned it. Now I am stuck with it and have buyers remorse

Press menu button, go to the settings wrench (left d-pad button), scroll to where it says Language, then select English. (you may have set wrong language because the wheel on the outside of the OK button acts like the iPod's click wheel).

Question

Blurry Pictures

I took my new S9100 to an outdoor concert last night. When I was using the zoom to take pictures while the sun was still shining, my pictures were turning out just fine. But, when it got dark, using the zoom was giving me blurry pictures. I would take the picture, making sure to focus on the singer. Then, I would look at the screen to see a crisp picture save to my memory card, and as it saved, it would turn blurry. Could you please tell me how I can avoid this problem or fix this issue?

Note: I have attached a photo taking in the sunlight that is great and one that was taken at night, so you could see the difference in quality to better address my question.

The camera senses when it's darker conditions, and it makes the shutter speed longer (i.e instead of 1/300th of a second it's 1/10th of a second), so the actions are blurred. Flash might help, but in general moving subjects in dark conditions are hard to shoot.
