Yes, but it will not autofocus on a D40/40x/60/3000/3100/5000/5100. This lens will only autofocus with bodies that have built-in auto-focus drive motors, such as D80/D90/D7000, and up.
Nikon specs are wrong it said "AF-S lenses required for autfocus". Never owned one but further research showed it was the only low end consumer DSLR to have a built in screw drive.
Will this lense work well, or even work at all with the Nikon D3000? And what is Auto focus?
I have the nikon d3000. this lense is what i can afford. but im new with all the auto focus stuff. Please help!

I don't believe there is anything about this lens that would make it incompatible with your camera. I think you will find that it will expand your vision by bringing small things closer and allowing you to take pictures of objects at about five feet away and throw the background out of focus so the entire picture concentrates upon your object of interest. You will find he lens light and easy to work. Just remember to relax, take your ttime, take a deep breath and squeeze the shutte button slowly to get great pictures.
Yes. Any af-s lens will work with the Nikon d3000. Af-s means that there is a servo motor in the lens itself to power the auto focus. All of your lenses need to be af-s if you want autofocus to work.
The D3000 does not bring a Auto-Focus motor for AF Lenses, this is what helps the lens engage focus on a subject when pressing halfway the shutter button. This camera requires lenses with the motor built-in. Make sure they say "AF-S" at the beggining of the model.
Cameras such as the D5000 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.
You may want to try the AF-S version of this lens.

Yes, the AF 70-300 4/5.6G zoom lens not only works with the D90, but it works very, VERY well! That's all functions, including ambient and flash metering, autofocusing in all modes, DOF preview...everything! And it is particularly well balanced on a D90, permitting low shutter speed hand held shooting without the need for VR.
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D60 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.

There are no teleconverters that are compatible with this lens. The reason is because the back element on this lens moves too far and will hit the front element of the teleconverter.
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D3200 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. The AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G lens will not autofocus on the Nikon D3100 but is otherwise compatible. For lenses that will autofocus look for those with AF-S designation, like the AF-S-VR-Zoom-Nikkor-70-300mm Lens.

No. You will need an af-s lens as your camera does not have an internal focusing motor. If you use just an af lens, the lens will have to be focused manually.

For d3100 AF-s DX 55-300 f4.5-5.6 G ED VR is the correct lens and still affordable. The Vibration Reduction (VR) makes it more practical fo the long end of the zoom when being hand held.
