Infinity. I prefer the 24-70 f2.8 Ed II For all around use.You have the same 24mm but you will have a better Portrait lens and more power with the 70mm.But if you want power a 70-200 or 70-300 lens. The lens in a F3.5 is priced for starters. But later on you will Buy the 70-200 f2.8 Ed II. You will not regret buying this lens..I shoot this all the time on my D3 and a 24-70m F2.8 on the other Nikon D3.. My Next Trip in August is Alaska 7 day Trip....I need Gris Pics
Hi, It's normal this lens is old technology new lens like 18-55ED or 18-55VR is better than this lens. (I have 14-24, 18-35, 10-24, AF 20 2.8, 18-55ED, 18-55VR, 18-105VR, 18-200VR, 28-300VR, 85 PC, 70-200VR, 105 2.5, 200 f/2 etc.)
Will this lens be compatible with Nikon D5100 DSLR?
From what i have gathered i believe it will be compatible however, the auto focus might not work, so one will have to manually focus it. However, is this because the lens itself doesn't provide auto focus or is it due to the incompatibility of the lens and camera?

Quite simply, it will fit and work but you will not have autofocus.
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D5100 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.
