Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II

Question

Will the TC-14EII work on the new Af-S 80-400 at full reach

Ok I know I should use a 2.8 lens but that is out of my price range at this time.
I am looking to purchase this combination to shoot pictures of bears in AK. I am told that they are normally at 100-600 mm away. I do have a 70-200 F2.8 with a TC-2. But want what will take the best pictures at this distance. Any suggestions on the best lens choice? My camera bodies are D600 & D7100.

Well I would have to differ with Joe's suggestion. The 200 mm f/2.8 is most definitely not better optics than the NEW G 80-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 on a full frame body like a D600. And if you put a TC-20 on the 70-200, you get right back to f/5.6 again that you already have with the 80-400. The 80-400 also has better VR than the 70-200 f/2.8 , which has disappointing MTF in the corners of the full frame (wide open).

The older 80-400 D lens is nowhere near as good as the new one.

I also have the 70-200 f/4 nikkor, and although it is not as well built as the older f/2.8 lens, it has much superior VR and is better at f/4 than the older f/2.8 lens is.

I use my D-7100 in crop mode with the 2.0 TC, and the 80-400 mm wide open, and hand held, and I can get very good pictures, at effectively 1600 mm and f/11. Now it might not track a flying bird, but it auto focusses just fine on birds sitting in trees.

I do have a mono-pod, and also a pistol grip, and either one works with the 80-400.

I believe the 80-400 G is cheaper than the 70-200 f/2.8 plus the TC-20E III

But bottom line, this new TC-1.4E III will work fine with the 80-400, on either the D7100, or D600. I have the 1.4 E II, and am considering upgrading to the III version, which appears to be a more advanced design.

Any of these TCs also work with the 105 mm f/2.8 macro lens, which I also use with them.

I have the new Nikkor 80-400 mm f/4.5 to f/5.6. I also have BOTH the TC-14E II, and the TC-20E III and I use them on a D7100, or D 7,000 bodies, and it autofocusses just fine with EITHER of those teleconverters, on at least stationary objects, like an eagle up a tree a quarter mile away.

So it is NOT supposed to work at f/11, but in daylight IT DOES. I'm very happy with it. My D7100 gives me a 1600 mm f/11 lens with the TC 20, and it is razor sharp; same with the 1.4 x.

Lets answer in a different way since you didn't understand my first answer. Most consumer grade Nikon DSLRs will not autofocus when e maximum aperture is greater than 5.6. The 80-400 with a 1.4 teleconverter has a maximum aperture at the long end of f/8 (5.6x1.4). The D7100 and D600 will auto focus at f/8. You will need a tri or monopod to steady the camera. I would suggest your D7100 with the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 2.0 teleconverter. Thw teleconverter will give you 140-400mm coupled with the 1.5 DX crop you get 210-500. Switching your D7100 to the built in additional 1.3 crop mode you will now have an effective field of view of 275-650mm with a lens that has better optics than the 80-400mm and you will be shooting with a faster maximum aperture of f/5.6
Hopefully you understand my explanation.

Question

Can the TC-14E II be used with my AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF-ED?

I want to be able to use this and the other currently produced TC lenses with my AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D IF-ED, but I don't see my macro lens listed in the TC compatibility list. Is this an oversight or is my lens just not supported at all? It seems that my lens has to be supported, and that the compatibility list is just old. Someone please provide a knowledgeable answer.

No, if you are using a Sigma lens then you will have to use a Sigma TC as the Nikon TC's will not fit.
