It is not going to work in auto focus mode; not sure if it will work in manual focus, but it should. It's nice to see that Nikon sets up this forum and then ignores it; oh so typical for their level of care and service to their customers. I guess they make no money answering you.
The reason it will not work in autofocus mode is that the sensor, in order for it to focus the lens needs enough light to get in to function. Nikon tells you that it needs to be f5.6 or brighter. I have a D80 and it works fine at f6.3 though using a pro optics 1.7 autofocus teleconverter on a Nikon 70-210 f4.0 lens so it should work as long as your lens is in the short range at 70mm because your aperture will be f5.6 (the 1.7 teleconverter drops your aperture by 1.5 stops) but at the long end (or whenever the lens changes to f5.6) your aperture will become about f10, way too dark for the autofocus to work. Hope this helps. The autofocus teleconverters are really made to be used with f2.8 lenses for sure.
