Hi if your lens in not a VR you could just use the way we took pictures before VR just set the shutter speed at or higher than the lens length ( example 200 MM == 200 th of a second or higher this does work to help with shake but not in low light when you need a slow shutter .

how big? about 2-3 exposure values, that's how big it is, especially at longer focal lengths. it lets you shoot handheld in situations where it would just blur otherwise.

I do not see the "VR" switch on it, so I would say it is non-VR. I don't have any non-VR lens, so can not tell you the difference, but I would say, it is helpful to have in certain situations.

There are quite a few, but the most affordable are the:
AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G
AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G
All are fixed focal length primes.

Yes, this lens will work just fine on the D7000, as will the other non-S series Autofocus lenses.

Do you feel any resistance when you zoom out and manually focus? Try cleaning the focus ring with compressed air and clean the electrical contacts on the lens. It has a built in focus motor in the lens. It might cost you more than the $250 US it costs to have it repaired. Is it under Nikon's extended warranty?

Not only is this lens compatible, it's a great match for the D3000. As a DX lens, this lens is designed with the DX crop sensor in mind. The light exits the rear of the lens at the precise angle to maximize sharpness and reduce falloff at the edges while the two ED elements reduce chromatic aberration . The built in motor provides fast autofocus.

Go for it, it's a very good lens.
