It is one of Nikon's finest telephoto lenses. It will work fine with your D200. The effective field of view will be 600mm, this lens also accepts Nikon's teleconverters.
I am going to get either the 600 f/4 or 400/f2.8. If I were to attach a 1.4 teleconverter to the 400 would I get the same quality as with a 600
If I were to attach a 1.4 teleconverter to a 400 mm lens would i get the same quality as using a 600 mm lens as is or would the teleconverter decrease the quality significantly. Also, overall which lens do you think is better for a d300s? Thank you so much. This is a big purchase and I just want to make sure that I am getting the best lens for me

Depends on what you are going to be using them for, a 400mm with the 1.4 will give you 560mm though iq remains very good as it does on the 600mm. Cant really help beyond that as no idea on what you intend to use either lens for.
