Question

True Maximum Angle of View

I want to buy a fish eye lens for my D3200, but found
Facts:
1- Tech Spec for AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED has Maximum Angle of View (DX-format) 180°
2- Nikon Lens-Simulator announce 106°40' for Maximum Angle of View (DX-format) for above lens,
3- Tech Spec for AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens has Maximum Angle of View (DX-format) 109°
questions:
a: which of data 1 and 2 above regarding Maximum Angle of View is correct?
b: what factors other than Focal Length, affect angle of view? (I expect AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens has wider Maximum Angle of View than AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED but 1 and 3 above do not confirm that)

thanks

Apologize, I found the simulator you are using and it is not giving the correct data for the fisheye, it is a 180 degree angle of view. Again the design of the fisheye is what gives it the 180 degree field of view
Compare the two images:
Fisheye:http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/specoalpurpose/fisheye/af_dx_fisheye105mmf_28g_ed/index.htm

Angle of view is 180 degrees onth 10.5 fisheye, simulator does not have the fisheye lisyed (Iassume you are not using the simulator correctly)The 10-24 has a max viewing angle of 109 degrees. Th fisheye has a wider angle of view becuase of the construction of the lens. it has the ability to" bend" light. The is why there is a curved effect on the fisheye image.

10-24 is very fun when you take a portrait photo, but not good. 28-300 is all around lens not the best don't hope so much, prime is better if you want really good portrait picture. Try 50 or 85mm lens.

Does the 10-24 lens use regular 77mm filters or does it require low profile filters?

I have recently purchased the lens and want to protect it with a UV filter. I will occasionally use a circular polarizer on top of it.

The 10-24mm and 14-24mm are not ideal for portrait or nature photography. They are wide lenses so would normally be more used for landscape, though you can get some funky effects with wide angle lenses. For portrait I would much more recommend the 50mm 1.8D or G or the 85mm 1.8D or G. For nature, it depends what kind of nature photography you want to do. I would say probably a 300mm focal distance is probably the minimum that you want. I have shot deer with a 200mm but it isn't ideal and to get a really nice shot you have to get much closer than you would really ideally want to (mostly they just run off, fortunately. If you want to do insect photography, I would would say that the best value lens is the Tamron 90mm 2.8, it is cheap feeling and noisy but optically it is great.

Hope this is useful.
