Ignore the fact that its work without any issue because its too expensive and on DX camera at 24mm angle of view is very narrow. If you want the best lens for DX get 17-55 2.8, the best for D50.

The lens has a gasket at the back of the lens mount to help seal the lens to the camera body. To my knowledge this 24-120 f/4 is NOT environmentally sealed like the "Gold Ring" lenses like the 24-70 or the 14-24. Nikon's website makes no mention of sealing.

Question

Focus Shift After Zooming

In the Ratings & Reviews section on this site, dnaplasmid reported that the focus of this lens changes when zooming. Is this report accurate? If I zoom in and focus manually for a shot, then zoom out and take the picture, will the focus have shifted with this lens? I have not noticed this to be the case with other zoom lenses.

Question

24-120mm FX on a D300S medium format camera

I currently own the AF-S DX Nikkor18-105mm, F3.5-5.5 ED VR. (kit lens) I shoot with the D90 & D300S. I'm trying to decide how much of an upgrade I'm getting if I purchased the F4 FX format 24-120. From what I'm reading the FX won't make as much of a difference, unless I upgraded to a full format camera body. Would this be correct? I've done the comparisons via your site, but am still undecided. The price difference between the two lens if quite a bit, so want to understand why the 24-120 is so much better. I've read reviews on both lens & most people like them both. I've shot some good images with the DX, but was at a class and the instructor said my "kit" lens was a piece of junk & get a new lens....The remark has been bothering me ever since. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hello Pat,
1) I respectfully disagree with your instructor. The 18-105mm kit lens is actually very good, and I honestly can't see much difference between it's results and those of more expensive zoom lenses when properly shot.
2) If you want still more quality, forget the zooms: you'll have to move to fixed (prime) lenses. Start with the more economical AF-S G 35mm f/1.8, AF-D 50mm f/1.8 and AF-D 85mm f/1.8 (in this order) before spending 4 digits on glass.
3) The 24-120mm is actually a bit long on DX. If you like it's angle on FX, try it's DX cousin, the 16-85mm (my favorite Nikkor zoom on DX, but still not as good as any of the fixed lenses mentioned above).
Kind regards, Paulo.

Question

Zoom and focus rings

I used to own the older version of this lens, the f/3.5-5.6 lens. I didn't like it because the rings to zoom and focus were backwards. It was hard to get used to. Is the f/4 version the same way or like most other Nikons where the zoom and focus rings are located?
