The best way to clean a filter is to use a piece of lint free lens cleaning tissue and a small amount of Lens Cleaning solution. Do not use anything containing abrasives or solvents, only use Lens Cleaning Solution.

Its not necessary at all, most of the time they are used for protection of the front element. They shouldnt effect the image at all as long as you use a clear glass type filter.
Hi. I just bought this filter for a new AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G EDII lens, which looks like it is one of the compatible lenses. However, I'm having trouble attaching the filter. It doesn't seem to want to screw on. Is there a trick to it or am I missing something? Thanks!

NC is a neutral clear filter meant to protect the lens only, UV filters UV light(not as important on digital cameras) they are used more for protection. If you get a UV filter I suggest a good quality multi coated filter.
While I was cleaning this filter (which was mounted on a lens) with a lens pen, I noticed that even a slight push with the pen will cause the glass on the filter to depress downward. If I ease off the pressure on the pen, the glass will come back up. Is this behavior to be expected, or is my filter broken?
It seems like the circular piece of glass is held in place by a ring of rubber, which might explain why it allows for such movement, but the whole thing "feels" so flimsy that I thought I should ask this question.

Just checked mine, it is held in by a metal spring ring and doesn't depress at all when I push on it.
