Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. MH-23 Quick Charger
Question
LED blinking pattern never stops
I bought a D5100 less then a month ago, with an MH-24 and two batteries. First couple of times I've recharged the batteries, the charger did what its documentation says it would: the orange LED blinks steadily (short blinks) while charging then stays on when the battery is charged. However, just recently I noticed something different happening. It first did it with one battery, then it started doing it with the second battery about a day or two later: the led blinking has a pattern to it: one short blink followed by a long blink, then repeat. It never stops blinking. The batteries are still getting charged and I haven't noticed any diminished capacity or anything else with them. But why is the charger behaving the way it does?

Chris, I never received an answer, either from Nikon or any other member. No one seems to know what's going on or why they it starts behaving that way after a while.

It's not flickering, it is a steady blink, however a) it's a pattern of one fast and one slow blink, and b) it never stops blinking, even after it's been sitting there the whole night. The environment is not hot, ambient temperature is hovering around 70-75 degrees F where the charger sits.
When I first started using the charger, I was getting a steady blink, on-off-on-off, consistent. And it would turn solid after the battery is charged. After roughly 3 weeks, it started exhibiting the one fast, one slow blink pattern, and it never turns solid. But the battery is getting charged, I'm not seeing any diminishing performance out of the batteries - neither of them.
I've unplugged the charger several times now - this is a wall plug in charger, not a USB one. And I should also point out, I just realized this was posted in the MH-23 forum, as opposed to the MH-24 which is what I have.
If the light is flickering (not blinking slowly) it means that the ambient temperature is not suited to charging or the USB cable or Charging AC Adapter is not properly connected, or there's a problem with the battery. Disconnect the USB cable or unplug the Charging AC Adapter and correctly connect it again.
Can I use the cable which I used with older charger because that one has the EU input?
I have an older battery charger I used with Nikon 4300, the cable from that bundle matches the input hole in the MH-23 (that I got with d5000), can I use that cable (the old one) with the new charger because I'm in Europe, and the cable from my new bundle is US one?

I will be traveling to South Africa where the electrical system is 15A/250V. Will this charger work with a simple adapter or does it need a voltage converter?

Nikon Digital SLR cameras have an auto switching (from 100v to 240V 50hz/60hz) battery charger that will work in most countries around the world. A/C adapters have similar characteristics. Always check the specification plate on your other battery chargers or A/C adapters as third party products may not support dual voltage systems. We do not suggest the use of third party battery chargers and A/C adapters with Nikon equipment. Note that the cord included with the Nikon charger or A/C adapter is designed for 110 volt use only. A power cord suitable for the local power system should be obtained on arrival, most airport shops and computer suppliers will carry these items which are typically used for laptop conmputer power supply connections. Be sure that the new cord you buy fits the Nikon adapter you wish to use it with and that it is rated for the voltage in your new location. While not recommended, a simple plug adapter may be used, but caution should be taken as the cord Nikon supplies is not rated for the higher voltage and may heat or fail.

You can take it to the store it was purchased from, or another nikon dealer for evaluation. That way you will know if it is the battery or the charger that not working and needs to be replace.
Can I use overseas with 220V AC electrical systems?
I wish to confirm that I can use my charger overseas. I cannot seem to access the standard questions and answers in your Product Forum so I am asking you this question. I want to use my Nikon overseas and want to be sure that I can keep the battery charged. Thank you for your time and response.
