where does this go and how does it stay there?

I have the D3 and have trouble shooting in manual seeing the focusing screen on mine

Have you looked at the DK-17m magnifying eyepiece, that may help with you manual focusing.

The Type B screen is the one that is already fitted in the D3, your only other option is to use the type E screen but I doubt very much if it will help you with manual focusing as they are not split screen as the Katzeye screens are, but Katzeye dont make a screen for the D3, or at least they didnt when I last checked.
They fit up in the top of the body and are held in place with a retaining clip, its is highly advisable if you are going to change it that you let some one with experience change it as they are extremely delicate and one false move will render it useless as they can be marked very very easily.
