Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. ME-1 Stereo Microphone

Question

Does this work with the D3100?

Your website says it does. I would love to get this for my D3100 but there is only an A/V Out port, but it seems to be a 3.5mm jack, similar to the MIC port in the D5100 and D7000.

There's no MIC input on the D3100 and the 3.5mm jack is for AV output only. So unless Nikon has something up their sleeve it's very unlikely that this will work with the D3100.
Hopefully we can get an answer directly from Nikon on this one.

Question

Is this mic really powered by the hot shoe?

I can't tell if this actually receives power from the hot shoe, or if it's really an unpowered dynamic microphone.

I really like the idea of a powered condenser mic that receives its power from the hot shoe, because I don't want to have to worry about yet 1 more battery (plus, with no headphone output to monitor your source, you don't know if your mic battery dies in the middle of shooting when this is paired w/Nikon cameras). However, most of the hot shoe powered mics out there also transmit audio through the "advanced hot shoe", which clearly won't work for the Nikon D7000 & P7000...

If this mic really does get power from the hot shoe (no batteries, yay!) and transmits audio through the 3.5mm cable, then that's perfect.

Thanks

My guess is it's powered by a standard 3v dc output by the microphone-in socket. Everything else uses this so-called 'plug-in-power', why wouldn't Nikon ?

The power does not come from the hot shoe. Like the overwhelming majority of the microphones on the market, this microphone is powered via the cable.

That being said, this microphone was specifically developed to sit on the camera, since it has technology to reduce the noise of the camera autofocusing. Also the cable is long enough to span the distance from the microphone to the camera's audio input. To move the microphone any further from the body would require the use of a patch cable.

Will it work, sure. But that wasn't it's original design. There are better solutions available.

Question

Me-1 work with an iPhone for video audio?

I need to purchase an external microphone for my iphone to do better audio recordings. And since I have an ME-1 already (for my D5100), I thought I'd try connecting it to the iphone. Even though the connector fits, the iphone doesn't seem to recognize or utilize the ME-1. Has anybody else tried this?

I was able to find a cable which would allow me to connect the ME-1 to an iPhone (it won't work without an adapter). The good news is that the ME-1 does a great job of filtering out background noise compared to the built-in iPhone 4s microphone. Unfortunately, the audio level of the ME-1 drops off considerably as you move farther away from the subject when compared to the built-in microphone. So that's a trade-off.

it shouldn't be in the way. as you can see on the image, the mic's got a "leg" that keeps it sufficiently away from the pop-up flash. however, in video mode the flash won't work anyway, so it shouldn't be a bother either way.

Question

Compatibility?

I just asked a question about power, but in the answer, Nikon staff said the ME-1 is "not compatible with the P7000".

However, on the compatibility page, you clearly say that it is.
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Miscellaneous/27045/ME-1-Stereo-Microphone.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.CompatibleWith

The ME-1 is also listed on the P7000's Accessories page
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26233/COOLPIX-P7000.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.Accessories

I have seen elsewhere that the ME-1 is supposedly compatible with both the D7000 and P7000.

Can you clear up why an answer was given that the ME-1 is *not* compatible with the P7000??

Thanks

Question

If the mic gets power from the hotshoe, why do I get same sound on or off hotshoe?

I've done tests with the mic mounted on and off the hot shoe of my D7000 and there is no difference in sound. Also, I see no contacts on the mounting foot of the ME-1. It also has a tripod socket for, of course, mounting off the camera! So I guess the power comes through the cable from the mic input socket.

Question

Good for concerts (chorus type setting)

I had a simple point and shoot camera that I used to record videos of cousin's high school concerts. Will this microphone be "good" for that or should I get something like the Rode Stereo VideoMic instead of this unidirectional design. I am not very familiar with video recording and such using external microphones.

Examples of the "chorus" setting can be seen in the link provided. There is only one space for a video link, the setting is the same for the second video link I was going to provide, however, replace the singing with violin playing.
