Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter for 52mm Thread

Question

Can the ES-1 be used effectively with the new 40mm f/2.8 micro lens on a d90?

I do not need to know if the lens is compatable with the d90. I need to know if the focus distance with the 40mm lens is so short that it is too close to the slide on the ES-1.
If you answer this, please state if you are currently using the 40mm with the ES-1.
My experience is less than a month because I don't own this lens yet. I need the answer to this question before I purchase this lens.

While the ES-1 product information states it was intended for use with a 60mm macro lens, I saw several posts about its use with the 40mm lens instead. I bought both the ES-1 slide copy adapter and the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8 G and I emphatically want to say that this works PERFECTLY! The beauty of using the 40mm lens is twofold..........it is cheaper than 60 mm lens and the ES-1 is also already a 52mm thread, so no adapter ring is required to step up/down between it and the lens.

Any Nikon DX camera can use the ES-1 with a 40mm Micro-Nikkor AF-S lens. You will be able to re-photograph the entire image while maintaining AF and exposure control. This is a great way to digitize old 35mm slides. Much faster than scanning.

The PK-13 + ES-1 + 55mm f/2.8 AIS + D300 will NOT show the entire 24×36 mm frame of film because of the DX crop factor. You must use an FX camera. With DX, you have find a way to move the ES-1 further away from the front of the lens to be able to photograph a slide without cropping the edges off.

I'm curious about the new 40mm f/2.8G; will this lens allow us to mount the ES-1 and photograph the entire 24×36 mm image area of a slide?

Question

ES-1 and 40mm DX Micro

I'm interested in this combo for digitizing old slides. With a DX body I will have to use a 1:1.5 magnification ratio rather than 1:1, can the ES-1 be extended far enough to achieve this? Will I need additional spacers between ES-1 and the 40mm DX Micro?

It will fit with the right step up-step down rings, but you may need extension tubes to enable the lens to focus with the slide that close. You may also need to crop the image because off the adapter rings, but there are ways to make the copier work.

Question

Using ES-1 with reversed 50mm lens

I tried using the ES-1 slide copying adapter with my D70S and a 50mm f/1.4 D lens attached in reverse using the BR2A adapter, and the PK-13 extension ring. I could not get the entire slide in the field. I switched the order of the PK-13 and the lens, and most of the slide was visible, but the edges of the slide were not in focus. Is it possible to use the ES-1 with a reversed 50mm and get good results, or do I need a macro lens?

KeithD, thanks for the suggestion. I tried that, and by putting extra adapters before the PK-13 to increase the length a little further, I can get the slide in focus with the 50mm, but the edges are still quite distorted. Looks like I'll have to get the macro lens or find another solution. Thanks.
