Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. HB-32 Bayonet Lens Hood

Question

I would like to know if my lens, hood and circular polarizer are compatible; if it would cause any wignetting at all depending on settings?

I just got a circular polarizer filter II for my lens (AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR) which has the HB-32 hood. On the instruction manual of the filter, there is a table showing which lenses and respective hoods would cause vignetting. My lens or hood are not listed (I suppose because it is a newer model). I would like to know if they are compatible, if it would cause any wignetting at all, depending on the settings: with hood, no hood, wideangle,...

Thank you.

HB-32 IS FOR LENS BARRELS WIDER THAN YOUR 55-300 TELE ZOOM... IT WILL NOT ATTACH. IN ADDITION TO PHYSICALLY ATTACHING, YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE A HOOD COVERS ADEQUATELY.

THIS HOOD GIVES COVERAGE FOR 105 AND 140 BUT LONGER LENSES LIKE 200 OR 300.
YOU MIGHT FIND OLDER HOODS THAT WOULD MOUNT TO YOUR LENS, BUT CHECK COVERAGE.

A PROPER HOOD SHOOT PROTECT THE WIDE COVERAGE FROM SHADING (VIGNETTING) WHILE PROTECTING THE TELEPHOTO COVERAGE FROM STRAY LIGHT WHICH DOESN'T CONTRIBUTE TO YOR IMAGE.

18-55 AND 55-200 ARE 52MM - -SMALLER DIAMETER THAN THE LENSES HB-32 IS FOR.

COMPATIBLE MIGHT MEAN THAT THE HOOD WILL ATTACH... BUT YOU WANT MORE THAN THAT.

WHEN NIKON ENGINEERS A HOOD FOR SPECIFIC LENSES, IT MUST FIT YES BUT ALSO IT GIVE MAXIMUM PROTECTION WITH MINIMUM INTRUSION (VIGNETTING)

A HOOD MADE FOR THE 55-200 MIGHT CAUSE TOO MUCH SHADING AT 18MM; A HOOD MADE FOR THE 18-55 MIGHT ALLOW TOO MUCH GLARE FROM OUTSIDE LIGHT SOURCE. BUT INTERCHANGE THEM IN AN EMERGENCY UNDERSTANDING THE COMPROMISES.

THE HB-32 PHYSICALLY WILL NOT FIT THE 18-55 OR 55-200.

Is it reversible? I.e. can I put it on the lens in reverse order (while the lens cap is on) for easy storage?
