Customer Questions & Answers for
Nikon Inc. SC-29 TTL Coiled Remote Cord

Approx. 9-ft. coiled cord with built-in AF-Assist Illuminator for placement of the SB-910, SB-900, or SB-700 off camera. The SC-28/SC-29 makes off-camera TTL flash control easy and assured. With the Nikon D-SLRs, the SC-29 also works as an external AF-assist illuminator.

Questions & Answers for Nikon Inc. SC-29 TTL Coiled Remote Cord

Question

How to control flash unit attached to SC-29 cord from camera

I set up SB-910 as a master flash on SC-29 cord on a tripod and attached the cord to D300s. I could not figure out how to control the flash (switch from manual to TTL etc) from the camera. I kept standing up and changing the settings on my flash unit. Is it possible to control the flash unit from camera?

The problem is, you have the flash set to master. It should be set to ON (not master)

For some reason it does not work for me. I set up SB910 as master (dial the knob on the unit to master position), attach it to camera via cord, try to use commander mode on camera to control the flash but the flash unit does not respond. Only when I use the flash buttons does the unit change the output.

You control as you would if the flash is on camera using the cameras in built commander. It is just an extension cable so all functions can be controlled via commander.

With the switch in the OFF position, the AF Illumination occurs at the camera (if necessary), with the switch ON, AF illumination occurs at the switch end of the SC-29. Set the AF area bracket in the viewfinder to the center, and test in a low light situation.

Is there an extension cord for the SB-29? I recently purchased an SU-800 as part of the CLS to trigger my SB-900 and SB-600s, but at times may need a little more reach so that all of the units can "see" the signal.

Question

Can I trick the SC-29 TTL into thinking a flash is attached?

I'm using the cord with a D7000 & a SB-600. Sometimes I am at concerts where flash photography is not allowed and low light makes focusing difficult. And so I'd like to use the more discrete red AF assist lamp versus the on-board camera AF assist light. I'd like to keep things from getting too bulky so I'd rather not attach my SB-600 flash directly on camera just to use the red focus assist . Is there a way to attach the the SC-29 cord without having a flash on the end of it and have the cord's red AF Assist work? Splice or clip some wires? Thanks.

How does the SC-29 TTL Coiled Remote Cord attach to the SB-600?

There doesn't appear to be a manual for the cord and what I did find online appears to be in anything but English and so small I can read it anyway. It looks like one side sits in the shoe horn, but I"m not sure how the other side attaches to the SB-600 since there are no ports.
