The COOLPIX S01 offers a choice of 3 still image modes, all of which are saved at Normal (8-bit) JPG compression. The image mode options for the S01 are:
10M - 3648x2736
4M - 2272x1704
2M - 1600x1200

The S01 will automatically switch to Macro Close-Up mode when it senses that its appropriate to the scene/subject. All modes are selected automatically by the camera - you cannot manually select a scene mode on the S01. The focus range in Macro Close-Up mode is approximately 5 cm (2 in.) –∞ (W) or approx. 50 cm (1 ft 8 in.) – ∞ (T).

Since the S01 does not allow you to select the scene mode or aperture setting it is going to be difficult for you to control depth of field. Portrait and Macro modes tend to have less depth of field while the Landscape mode tends to have greater depth of field but the camera will choose the mode based on your scene/subject. To delete pictures while in playback mode, Press the home button,(House Icon).--> Then press the down arrow to scroll down, and you should see the delete Icon. Press the delete icon, and you will be given the option to delete Select Images, All Images, or Select By Date.

There is no option in S01 to save your flash settings when you turn the camera off. The only settings that are remembered after you turn the camera off are the Image Mode, the Touch Shooting option and any of the options in the Set-Up (Wrench) menu.

Please ensure that your S01 is fully charged and that the time and date are set and try formatting the internal memory again. See page 60 of the S01 manual for info on formatting the internal memory and page 57 for info on setting the time and date. If this doesn't help try resetting the camera using the reset button that is on the bottom of the camera next to the USB port.
